Yes, but not very often. For some reason the green paint falls away, but some of the white is retained though lost in washing. I gave a white painted base D&S soda to Peck Markota long years ago when digging such was commonplace. Not these days, the gravy is long over.
Another time, while digging in Belmont, NV, we dug several 1870s whiskeys, mostly E. Martin mid crown fifths that had green painted bottoms. That paint stayed solid after washing. It must've been a local dealer who wanted his bottles returned.

ReplyDeleteI have a Williams Severance with a painted pontil. Not entirely sue if it was part of the normal pontil process or put there intentionally.
